The music of yoga is generally thought to come in three forms. The first is slow, downtempo music with ethnic ambient sounds. This type of music is ideal for casual, relaxed yoga and is one of the most popular types of music for yoga practitioners. In my list of mixes below you can see mixes with this form of music marked "ethno-ambient".

Secondly, we have "uptempo beats" music that combines more dance music forms and louder beats. This style has become hugely popular over the last few years as producers seek out ways to merge ethno-ambient sounds with hip-hop, trip-hop , trance and other bass heavy genres.

Finally, the most relaxing form of yoga music is "deep meditation". This is generally beat-less music that is more suited for contemplative mediation mixed with yoga. I find this type of music best for individual practice where one wants to achieve the ultimate form of distraction free meditative yoga.

Yoga Mix 05 - Om Shanti Drift

Om Shanti Om. Welcome back to the yoga music podcast. Our latest mix is now ready for download. For inspiration I explored the sounds of Hindu belief in the cosmic manifestation surrounding the symbol Om. Combined with the word Shanti, meaning peace, the phrases Om Shanti Om is one which expresses peace and harmony to all living things in the universe. When chanted repeatedly it also helps to create balance and a sense of relaxation.

This mix features alluring eastern melodies and ethno-ambient sounds to create a long unwinding journey into the heart of creation. It begins with an evocative song by Cheb I Sabbah ( Haim Serge El Baz ). A world renowned musician and DJ, Cheb I Sabbah has numerous albums released on the Six Degrees Records label. His music combines Asian and Middle Eastern sounds embedded with modern styles creating an exotic fusion of music perfect for yoga.

After some more classic ethnic ambient sounds from world music legends Loop Guru and Karsh Kale we get into some more modern approaches thanks once again to the Desert Dwellers with a track from the album Muladhara Yoga Dub. Desert Dwellers are perhaps my favorite group when it comes to more modern sounding, beats driven yoga music.

An interesting album to follow up on from this mix is the Tip World Records compilation Twelve released back in 2001. It is a concept album in which each artist was requested to compose a track in a different key - hence the name 12 - representing twelve unique musical keys. It's a wonderful listening experience and includes many leading artists from the electronic music world.

Finally, I highly recommend picking up the superb self titled album from Ashirvad.  I featured a track from it on the mix 04 and I dig into it once again for this mix. The album is jam packed with beautifully crafted Indian sounds mixed with hypnotic bass and deep ambient atmospheres that can be used in yoga music playlists and background meditation music.
